Pernicious anemia is loosely used to mean a state of anemia due to vitamin B12 deficiency. In a strict sense, it refers to an autoimmune disease that results in the loss of function of the gastric parietal cells, which secrete hydrochloric acid to acidify the stomach, and which secrete the gastric intrinsic factor that facilitates the absorption of vitamin B12
