Shin splints (also known as periostitis) is a general term used to refer to a painful condition in the shins. Shin splints are often caused by running or jumping, and may be very slow to heal. Freestyle skiers often suffer from shin splints due to the stress on the shin while landing a jump. It is a common injury suffered by cross-country runners. There is no direct cure for shin splints; it heals with time and rest.
